Individuals decide to seek therapy for many reasons, but underlying all these is a desire for things to be different and for positive changes to occur. Whether you are seeking relief from specific symptoms (such as depression or anxiety), seeking to improve your relationships, or would like to focus on personal growth and self-improvement, psychotherapy can facilitate the necessary changes to help you reach those goals.
People often question the value or efficacy of psychotherapy, believing that friends and family serve the same role as therapists. While having close relationships with your family and friends is highly beneficial, the therapeutic relationship is unique since it is less susceptible to judgments, criticisms, or unfair conclusions. There are no harsh ramifications for your anger, embarrassment, or other uncomfortable or "bad" emotions. You are free to be yourself without the obligations of your other roles (spouse, parent, son/daughter, employee, etc.)
One of the most common misconceptions of "talk therapy" is that it dismisses life's hardships or our justification for experiencing negative emotions. Indeed, life can be tough, and it's appropriate to respond with sadness or fear when the situation calls for that response. However, quite often, our responses are disproportionate to the situation, leading to catastrophic fears and states of helplessness, hopelessness, and depression.
Our work together will be a collaboration as we bring about the changes you seek. Exploring your thoughts and their related feelings and behaviors will improve mood, judgment, self-esteem, and relationships with the significant people in your life. I will help you gain skills that you will be able to use across different situations and circumstances. As therapy progresses, you will have improved insight into your feelings and more adaptive skills in managing stressors that previously would have resulted in negative moods and maladaptive behaviors.
